The advancement of firearms technology, in particular the refinement of propellants, barrels and the quality of rifle scopes has led to a revolution in long distance shooting. These advances have resulted in accuracy standards that were hardly imaginable 50 years ago.

Most good production rifles today will shoot 1 MOA (29.1mm, at 100m) with a lot even managing ½ MOA. However even though mechanical consistency is attained, the human body is an unstable platform and we have therefore relied on bipods, sandbags and various other aids. The prone position using bipods and sandbags is probably the most stable followed by a bench shooting platform. In real life however, especially in hunting situations, and indeed some competitive formats, these positions are just not available.
